Recognising Decades of Voluntary Service Given to Alexandra Park

🫶 This morning, it was our absolute privilege to recognise three stalwart volunteers: John Broomhead, Joe Edgar and Kevin Johnson.
👏 They have dedicated decades of their life to improving Alexandra Park and the surrounding areas, including the Community Garden and Bowling Green.
𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻 𝗕𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱: originally a Trees and Woodlands Officer before his retirement, John has been putting his green fingers to use in Alexandra Park since 2009.
After seeing a notice asking for volunteers, John signed up and on 23 September 2010, the Friends of Alexandra Park Group was created. He has been volunteering ever since, and says there is still so much to be done.
𝗝𝗼𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝗴𝗮𝗿: for over 30 years, Joe has been active in our community. From the 1990s, with the St Mark’s Boys Brigade; leading Bible classes at Bramble House; and running a group to welcome asylum seekers.
It was through his work with the asylum seekers that around seven years ago he became a gardener. These lads, who were mainly Eritrean, were becoming depressed with nothing to do with their time. So Joe thought the garden would be a good outlet for them.
They were very enthusiastic at first and soon got stuck in. But unfortunately, after three weeks they all got their papers and immediately went to live in Manchester. So the garden became Joe and Kath's garden, and so it has remained since.
Joe said: “It's hard work but we have had some success, twice doing well in the Wigan in Bloom awards. We have also have been able to supply Toms Pantry in Poolstock with lots of potatoes, 6 bags this summer.”
𝗞𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻 𝗝𝗼𝗵𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻: following his retirement, Kevin first became involved in Alexandra Park Bowling Green in 1993.
Over time, his responsibilities have grown from taking care of the painting at the Bowling Green, to maintaining the benches, the green itself, the bowling pavilion, and everything in between!
Recently, Kevin treated the Wooden Soldier at the Bowling Green with preservative, ahead of Armistice Day in November. This is something he does every year, ensuring our community can come together to remember those we have lost in war.
Kevin has also served as Chairman of the Wigan Catholic Men’s Bowling Leauge, and enjoys going down to the Bowling Green every day without fail. To socialise with other members, and keep on top of general maintenance.
Recently, he has also started to give bowling lessons every Monday, in cooperation with Wigan Council’s Active Living Team. Kevin has said that this helps to improves the physical well-being of those who take part, but is also a chance for people to come together and socialise, who would otherwise be “stuck inside looking at four walls.”
All in all, Kevin’s voluntary work over the last three decades has meant that we have a jewel in the crown of Newtown: a Bowling Green that is kept in immaculate condition all year round, for those in the community to use. Bringing people together, and improving their mental and physical well-being in the process.
👏 A huge thank you to all those who made today’s special occasion possible:
The Mayor, Councillor Kevin Anderson, for presenting the three gentleman with their awards.
Matt Kelly, Streetscene Services Manager, and Mike Cheers, Streetscene Operations Manager, for joining us.
Ross, from Standards of the Wiend, for the stunning trophies and silver salver.
Christine from Gaskell's Munch Box for the delicious buffet!
The Hub Café at St. Mark’s Church for providing refreshments and accomodating us so well!
